Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Friday extended the interim bail on medical grounds granted to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, an accused in a money laundering case, by four weeks.

On May 6, the High Court had granted two-month interim bail on medical grounds to Goyal, arrested in a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Goyal, 75, has now filed an application seeking extension of the same.

Goyal, who is suffering from cancer, had submitted before the high court that he should undergo preliminary laparoscopic surgery.

His lawyer Aabad Ponda told a single bench of Justice N. J. Jamadar that the surgery is scheduled for July 23.

The court took note of this and extended the interim bail for four weeks.

"Having examined the medical reports and the situation in which the applicant finds himself, in the context of physical and mental ailments, aggravated by the death of his wife, I consider it appropriate to extend the provisional bail for medical reasons for a period of four weeks" , the HC stated.

He will hear Goyal's bail application on both medical and substantive grounds on August 2.

Earlier this week, the ED told the court that the bail could be extended by three weeks provided Goyal undergoes a medical examination at Tata Cancer Hospital and a proper medical report is submitted regarding his health condition.

Goyal, in his application for extension of interim bail, stated that his health condition remains poor and his mental health has also deteriorated.

Goyal was arrested by the central agency in September 2023 on charges of laundering money and diverting loans worth Rs 538.62 crore given to Jet Airways by Canara Bank.

His wife Anita Goyal was arrested in November 2023 when the ED filed its chargesheet in the case. The special court granted him bail on the same day taking into account his age and medical condition. He died on May 16.
