Bhubaneswar, BJP leader Mohan Charan Majhi became the third tribal Chief Minister of Odisha after Congress's Giridhar Gamang and Hemanand Biswal.

Odisha got a tribal Chief Minister after 24 years.

Biswal was the first tribal of Odisha to serve as Chief Minister twice.

The Congress leader first held the top post for the period between December 7, 1989, and March 5, 1990. He became CM again on December 6, 1999, while his tenure ended on March 5, 2000.

Biswal was a six-time MLA and also represented the Sundergarh constituency in the Lok Sabha.

In his second term, Biswal replaced Gamang who was the Chief Minister from 17 February 1999 to 6 December the same year.

Gamang was also elected to the Lok Sabha nine times between 1972 and 2004.

Majhi, a tribal BJP leader, was named the chief minister after coming to power by defeating the BJD which has been ruling the state for 24 years.
