New Delhi, A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that the Congress manifesto said they will count the gold with mothers and sisters and redistribute it, the Congress on Monday said it will make the biggest contribution in history. Those overseeing sales will be recorded as PM. and pawning off gold jewelery owned by Indian women.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan's Banswara, Modi alleged that the Congress planned to give away people's hard-earned money and valuables to "infiltrators" and "those who have more children".

He had claimed, “The Congress manifesto says that they will settle the accounts of the gold with mothers and sisters and then distribute that property. They will distribute it to those whom Manmohan Singh's government had said that Muslims have the first right on the country's property.,

In a post on Twitter, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "Prime Minister Modi will go down in history as the PM who oversaw the largest-scale sale and mortgage of gold jewelery owned by Indian women."

"Economic disasters like demonetisation, poorly designed GST and the Modi government's unplanned lockdown and poor Covid relief package have pushed India's households into the highest levels of debt (40 per cent of GDP)," he said.

"Net savings are at an all-time low (5 per cent of GDP). Households have been forced to sell their gold or take loans against mortgages - this is a situation of distress and desperation," Ramesh said.

He said the outstanding gold loans have increased by 300 percent in the last five years. The Congress leader said, "In February 2024, gold loans crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark for the first time in the history of India. These are shameful figures."

“Recall that during the pandemic alone, due to the complete incompetence, negligence and mismanagement of the Modi government, women of India had to give up gold worth more than Rs 60,000 crore as collateral. Their gold was completely auctioned off by lenders and banks. “One-page advertisement was given,” he said.
