Aizawl: The death toll in multiple landslides in Mizoram's Aizawl district has risen to 29 after four more bodies were recovered from different places. The police officer gave this information on Wednesday.

He said seven people were still missing and rescuers believed they were trapped under debris at various places following landslides and incessant rain following Cyclone Remal on Tuesday.

A total of 25 bodies were recovered by the night of 28 May, of which 14 were from the stone mine collapse site.

Aizawl Superintendent of Police Rahul Alwal said the death toll in the stone mine collapse in Methum has risen to 15 after four more bodies were found late Tuesday night and five bodies were found in Hlimen.On Tuesday, three bodies were found in Salem Veng area of ​​Aizawl, two each in Falcon and Aibok villages and one each in Lungsei and Kelsih villages, he said.

According to Alwal, of the 29 victims, 23 are residents of Mizoram, five are from Jharkhand and one is from Silchar city of Assam.

The dead include a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.

Aizawl Deputy Commissioner Nazuk Kumar said the search and rescue operation was still underway and would continue until all the missing persons were found.

He said teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and fire department have been deployed in search and rescue operations.The state capital was cut off from the rest of the country for several hours on Tuesday due to a landslide on National Highway-6 at Hunther in the western part of the city.

Officials said the road blockade was removed in the evening and traffic was restored.

In Aizawl city, cemeteries at Republic Veng, Kanan Veng and Kulikavan were damaged by landslides.

Officials said there was no rain in the state capital since Wednesday morning.

In view of the inclement weather warning issued by the IMD, the Mizoram government on Wednesday ordered closure of all offices and PSU units, except those dealing with disaster management and essential services.In an order, K Lalthommaviya, Commissioner and Secretary, General Administration Department, has also advised private sector offices to 'work from home' as far as possible.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the families of those killed in the disaster.

He said that his government has kept Rs 15 crore to deal with the disaster.

Officials said more than 150 houses were destroyed, dozens of trees and electric poles were uprooted, several roads were blocked and more than 50 residential units were submerged across Mizoram due to the rains and landslides.
