Aizawl, Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Madhup Vyas on Friday appealed to the people to vote in large numbers in the Lok Sabha elections.

Voting is going on for the state's only Lok Sabha seat amid tight security arrangements.

According to the Election Commission, more than 26 percent voting was recorded till 11 am.

"The government has declared a public holiday for government employees and a Pi holiday for the private sector. We have appealed to everyone, especially government employees, to exercise their franchise," Vyas said at a press conference here. "

He said that in the Lok Sabha elections held in April 2019, only 63.13 percent voting took place in Mizoram, which was much lower than the national average of 67 percent.

He said low voting percentage not only weakens the spirit of democracy but also weakens the voice of the population in shaping the future of the country.

The CEO appealed to the Mizo people to set an example for other states by exercising their franchise in the Lok Sabha elections.

Over 8.56 lakh voters, including 4.4 lakh women, are eligible to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of the six candidates.

The highest turnout was recorded in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections at 73.41 percent, followed by 69.56 percent in 1998.

More than 82 percent voters had exercised their franchise in the state assembly elections held in November last year.
