Chennai: Wondering how Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to a temple in Kanyakumari or meditating is a violation of the election code of conduct, Union Minister Murugan on Thursday said opposition parties are making allegations out of fear of election defeat. Are applying.

He said that the opposition parties are only giving weak arguments to oppose the Prime Minister.

When Modi reached Kanyakumari, 'The Land's End', on Thursday evening, Murugan asked, "How can the Prime Minister visiting a temple in Kanyakumari and meditating at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial be a violation of the Model Code of Conduct?"

After visiting the ancient Sri Bhagavathi Amman temple on the coast near the Tri-Samudra Sangam, Modi boarded a launch operated by Poompuhar Shippin Corporation and reached the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in the middle of the sea near the Kanyakumari coast.

Speaking to reporters here, the Union Minister said that the opposition parties are afraid of defeat in the elections and hence are raising this issue.

Muruga said, "Who can stop the Prime Minister from meditating? Even the then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was involved in many spiritual activities. He renovated the temples, performed Kumbhabhishekam and even visited the temples."

The former AIADMK supremo supported the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and also supported the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya, he said.

Aide and PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss justified Modi's move and said there was nothing wrong in the Prime Minister meditating in Kanyakumari.

"This and the violation of the model code of conduct are two unrelated issues," he told reporters here.

Meanwhile, DMK student wing president R Rajiv Gandhi said though it was Modi's right to meditate, his actions would affect tourists, local fishermen and traders. While fishermen will not be able to catch fish for three days due to their visit, the ban on trade and tourism activity in Kanyakumari will affect around 50,000 people who depend on tourists for their livelihood.

Moreover, the Prime Minister's visit coincides with the summer tourist season in Kanyakumari, which attracts over a lakh tourists in May, he argued.

Unlike Modi's event, Swami Vivekananda's meditation was devoid of fanfare, Gandhi said in a post on social media platform X.
