Bastar (Chhattisgarh) [India], popularly known for IED blasts, encounters, killings and others, the insurgency-affected Bastar region of Chhattisgarh will emerge as the next hub of rubber production in India.

In the task of becoming another rubber producing hub of the country, the Shaheed Gundadhur College of Agriculture and Research Station, in support of the Government of Chhattisgarh and the Kottayam Rubber Board, have carried out rubber plantations on the lands. of the research station and the farmers. The initial results of the plantation have shown positive results.

To maintain the interest of farmers and improve their income, the institute has carried out rubber plantation for research purposes with the support of Rubber Board Kottayam and the government here, said Dr RS Netam, dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Shaheed Gundadhur Research Station.

Based on the research results, the crop will be brought to farmers' lands to strengthen their economic situation, Dr. Netam said.

Rubber crops will help strengthen the economic situation of farmers because they give yield for a long time, he added.

Giving details about the yield, the dean said that the lifespan of rubber crops is around 60 years, and they start generating income after completing seven years and continue up to 40 years. If all goes well, the plan is to motivate farmers to opt for growing rubber in their fields. With the support of the administration, the plan is to guarantee the cultivation of farmers' lands to improve their economic situation.

"We believe that the initiative will be very suitable for Bastar given the climatic conditions of Bastar," the dean said.

Talking about the growth of the planted saplings, Netam said that in one year, the planted saplings reached a height of 3 to 4 feet. After seeing the growth of the plants, it seems that the plan will be effective for both us and the farmers.

Currently, we have planted rubber on 2.5 acres of land within the research station campus and around 3 acres are owned by local farmers, informed Dr. Netam.

Depending on the growth of the plants in the next seven years, planning for expansion of the area will be considered, Dr Netam said.

When asked about the rubber processing plan, the Dean said that training will be provided to farmers engaged in rubber cultivation for rubber harvesting (of different quality), cutting, agronomic and other practices, so that they can get good prices. As production increases, it will attract rubber industries that will generate employment here.

Notably, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Rubber Research Institute (Kottayam) in 2023 for rubber cultivation in Bastar.
