LOS ANGELES, "Top Gun: Maverick" star Miles Teller will headline Paramount's upcoming remake of the 1982 classic film "An Officer and a Gentleman."

The film has been described as a new modern update of the original, directed by Hollywood veterans Richard Gere, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr.

The 1982 film revolves around Gere's Jack Mayo, an ambitious naval aviator who clashes with his hard-nosed drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant (Gossett).

The film, directed by Taylor Hackford, was a major box office success and even earned Gossett an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

According to entertainment news outlet Deadline, Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script after Matt Johnson's first draft.

The project will be produced by Temple Hill for Paramount.

Taylor was most recently seen in the Tom Cruise-led "Top Gun: Maverick." He will next be seen in Scott Derrickson's "The Gorge" co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy and the famed musician Michael Jackson biopic "Michael."
