Kolkata: The weather office on Wednesday predicted torrential rains in North Bengal till July 13, raising the possibility of flood-like conditions at some places in the region that has been hit by heavy rains for the past several days.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered the administration to keep a close watch on the situation and provide necessary assistance to people affected by landslides on hills and waterlogging in low-lying areas in the plains of North Bengal.

The weather office said active monsoon and an east-west trough from north-east Uttar Pradesh to Bihar to north-east Assam and sub-Himalayan West Bengal is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall over North Bengal till July 13. Is.

The weather department said most places in north Bengal received rainfall in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Wednesday, with Kumaragram recording 110 mm rainfall and Barobisha in Alipurduar district recording 90 mm rainfall during this period.

The weather department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar till July 13.

It said the intensity of rain in the area is likely to reduce slightly thereafter.

Saying that there is a possibility of floods in North Bengal due to continuous torrential rains in the region, Banerjee on Monday asked the administration to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of the situation.

Due to incessant rains in the region, roads including National Highway 10 connecting North Bengal with Sikkim have been damaged by landslides in the hills and waterlogging has occurred at various places in the plains of North Bengal.

Waterlogging was reported in some areas of Jalpaiguri city, Kranti and Mal in Jalpaiguri district, Mathabhanga and Tufanganj in Cooch Behar district.
