Nagpur: A woman accused of running over two people while driving her Mercedes car under the influence of alcohol more than four months ago in Maharashtra's Nagpur city has surrendered before police, officials said.

He said that Ritika alias Ritu Malu reached a police station in the city on Monday, where after questioning, she was formally arrested in the evening.

Late last month, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court had refused to grant pre-arrest bail to the woman, saying no sane person drives under the influence of alcohol and terming it as serious misconduct.

The incident took place on February 25 at Ram Jhula bridge when Malu, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drove his car recklessly and collided with two people riding a scooter.

Both riders, Mohammad Hussain Ghulam Mustafa and Mohammad Atif Mohammad Zia, suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

Malu was initially booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving and recklessly causing hurt to a person.

Later, following a public outcry and considering the seriousness of the accident, additional criminal charges were filed against him by police.

The woman was initially granted bail. However, the police later sought to re-arrest Malu, forcing him to approach the High Court for pre-arrest bail.

According to the police, he will be produced in the local court on Tuesday.
