A "gang leader" allegedly died by suicide while in police custody in Shillong, Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district on Friday. An officer gave this information.

The incident took place at Khanapara police station around 4 am.

District Superintendent of Police Jagpal Dhanoa said that Rudra Rabha was arrested on Wednesday.

On Thursday, a local court gave him five days' police custody.

"Today at about 4.00 am, the sentry on duty found that the accused person Rudra Rabha had committed suicide by hanging himself from the bars of the lock-up with a piece of cloth inside the male lock-up of the police station." S said.

An Executive Magistrate has been deputed by the district administration to conduct the investigation in the presence of a medical officer under proper videography/photography at the spot, he said.

The SP said that a case has been registered in Nongpoh and investigation is underway.

Earlier, on Wednesday night, Rabha had led the police to a forest in Ranibar area, where he had kept a country-made gun.

Police seized the gun as part of the ongoing case against him.
