New Delhi [India], External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said India reiterates its commitment to achieving shared prosperity through a flexible and open BIMSTEC region.

His comments came as he extended greetings on the occasion of BIMSTEC Day.

"Warm greetings on BIMSTEC Day! India reiterates its commitment to achieve shared prosperity through a flexible and open BIMSTEC region." Jaishankar posted on X with a video.

In February this year, BIMSTEC's new Secretary General Indra Mani Pandey had said that an agreement on cooperation in maritime transport between the member countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand - was expected to be finalized . The group's upcoming summit in Thailand this year.

The sixth BIMSTEC summit is scheduled to be held in Thailand in 2024.

For India, the BIMSTEC regional forum serves as a convergence of its "Neighborhood First" policy, or "Act East" approach and Indian Ocean interests.

BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) constitutes a unique link between South and Southeast Asian countries, with five members from South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka) and Two members are from South East Asia. (Myanmar and Thailand).
