Rudraprayag: A massive avalanche occurred on Sunday morning at Gandhi Sarovar, located four kilometers above Kedarnath Dham.

This avalanche occurred near Chorabari Glacier and fell in the valley in the same area but there was no loss of life or property.

The devotees who came to visit Kedarnath temple this morning captured this natural incident that happened at around 5 am in their mobile phones.

A huge cloud of snow was seen slipping rapidly and stopped after falling into a deep ditch. The avalanche occurred in the upper reaches of Gandhi Sarovar in the Chorabari Glacier, below the snow-covered Meru-Sumeru mountain range located at the upper end of the Kedarnath valley.

Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that there was no loss of life or property due to the avalanche.

Rajwar said, the entire area including Kedarnath valley is safe.

Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam employee Gopal Singh Rauthan was present in the temple when the avalanche occurred.

There was a lot of curiosity among the devotees who watched this natural phenomenon for about five minutes. Another avalanche occurred at Chorabari Glacier on June 8, Routhan said.

In 2022, three avalanches hit the region in the months of September and October. Five such incidents of avalanche were reported in Chorabari Glacier in May and June 2023. Subsequently, scientists from the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing and the Wadia Institute took stock of the entire situation by conducting terrestrial and aerial surveys of the area.

The team of scientists had then described these incidents as "normal" in the Himalayan region, but had stressed on improving security in the Kedarnath Dham region.
