In New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki India plans to use Indian Railways to transport 35 percent of the vehicles produced at its factories over the next 7-8 years, according to managing director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi.

The share of vehicle dispatches through railways increased to 21.5 per cent in fiscal year 2023-24 from 5 per cent in 2014-15.

The country's largest automobile manufacturer's vehicle dispatches through railways increased from 65,700 units in 2014-15 to 4,47,750 units in 2023-24.

"With our production capacity almost doubling from approximately 2 million units to 4 million units by fiscal year 2030-31, we plan to increase the use of railways in vehicle dispatch by about 35 percent in the next 7 to 8 years," Takeuchi said. .

Maruti Suzuki has so far shipped more than 20 lakh units through Indian Railways. The automaker transports vehicles to 20 destinations and serves over 450 cities through Indian Railways.

Takeuchi said the company pioneered the use of railways for vehicle dispatch more than a decade ago by becoming the first company in India to obtain the Car and Freight Train Operator license.

Since then, the company has systematically increased its share of shipping vehicles by rail, he added.

"Through our sustained efforts in green logistics, we have achieved outstanding results, including a cumulative reduction of 10,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and 270 million liters of cumulative fuel savings," Takeuchi said.

The company remains committed to the country's net zero emissions goal by 2070, he added.

Earlier this year, under the PM Gati Shakti programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country's first internal automobile rail siding at the Maruti Suzuki facility in Gujarat.

This facility has the capacity to ship 3 lakh vehicles per year.

The next in-plant railway siding is under construction at the company's Manesar facility and will soon be operational, the automaker said.
