Ranchi: A Maoist was killed in an encounter between security forces and Lal rebels in Jharkhand's Chatra district on Thursday afternoon.

The encounter took place in a forest on the Khunti-Chaibasa-Ranchi border, about 90 km from the state capital.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) said, "An area commander of the Maoist group was killed in an encounter with security forces on the Khunti-Chaibasa-Ranchi border. The area commander has been identified as Budhram Munda. The search operation is still underway. " Ranchi, Anoop Birthare told.

He said that CRPF's Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (Cobra) and Jharkhand Police jointly launched an operation against the Maoists from Chaibasa.

The encounter took place on May 25, two days before the Lok Sabha elections to be held on Ranchi, Giridih, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur seats.
