JAMMU: Fire has engulfed several forest and urban areas in the Jammu region, destroying large tracts of land, officials said on Friday.

He said the fire, which spread to urban parts of Jammu city, Rajouri, Samba, Reasi and Udhampur districts, destroyed large areas of plantations and other forest wealth.

Officials said the fire broke out in Chiladanga, Nund and Purandare areas in Samba, where forest officials and local residents are making tireless efforts to douse the fire.

Udhampur has also been severely affected, with fires reported in forest areas of Rakh, Nehra Nal and Krimchi. He said that efforts to control the fire are ongoing.Reasi district has been battling multiple wildfires, officials said, raising concerns about wildfires across the region.

Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has issued a warning of extreme forest fire danger for the coming week as temperatures continue to rise and dry conditions persist.

Authorities are mobilizing resources, including drones, to battle the blaze, however, the challenging terrain, high temperatures and dry conditions are making firefighting efforts particularly difficult, he said.

Forest fire is causing huge damage in Nowshera sub-division of Rajouri district. Officials said dry weather and scorching temperatures were contributing to the severity of the fire.A forest official highlighted the important role of prevention, with five cedar observers deployed in each of the division's 11 blocks.

He emphasized the human factor in the outbreak of these fires and urged the public to stay away from forest areas, especially avoiding the use of cigarettes and other potential fire sources.

A minor incident took place at the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu city, where an old truck caught fire. Officials said tankers from the fire service department immediately extinguished the flames.

Efforts to control and extinguish the fire are ongoing across the Jammu region and officials and locals are working together to minimize the damage, he said.
