Kolkata, Senior IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was on Tuesday appointed as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police, replacing Vineet Goyal, according to a notification.
The decision to remove Goyal, who was under attack for his handling of the incident of rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after a meeting with the agitating doctors on Monday night.
Goyal, of the 1994 batch, was made ADG and IGP of the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police.
Verma, a 1998 batch officer, was ADG and IGP (Law and Order) in his last assignment.
1995 batch IPS officer Javed Shamim was made ADG and IGP (Law and Order).
