Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday handed over a check of Rs 1 million as financial assistance to the family of farmer Shubhkaran Singh, who was killed during clashes between farmers and security personnel in February.

Mann also handed over an appointment letter for a government job to Shubhkaran's sister.

Originally from Bathinda, Shubhkaran was killed in clashes at Khanauri point on the Punjab-Haryana border on February 21 during a farmers' protest. Twelve police officers were also injured in the incident.

Clashes broke out when some protesting farmers tried to head towards the barricades and were stopped by security personnel from crossing the state border and marching towards Delhi.

Interacting with the grieving family members after handing over the check and appointment letter, Mann said that the Punjab government is committed to the welfare of food producers of the state, an official statement said.

The young farmer Shubhkaran Singh had achieved martyrdom, Mann mentioned, adding that this "barbaric and tragic incident had wounded the psyche of every Punjabi."

"The martyrdom of a farmer is a huge and irreparable loss for the family that cannot be compensated in any way," he said.

However, he said that a financial assistance of Rs 1 million and a government job for the family is a humble initiative of the state government to rescue the family in crisis.

The chief minister said that it is the bounden duty of the government to help farmers and their families in times of crisis, adding that the state government is already making strenuous efforts in this regard.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha leader (non-political) Jagjit Singh Dallewal and other farmer leaders were also present on this occasion.

The SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are leading the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march to pressurize the government to accept their demands, which include that the Center should give a legal guarantee for MSP of crops.

The farmers remain at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, when security forces stopped their march.
