Imphal, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said his government will compensate farmers who suffered losses due to the hailstorm that lashed the state on May 5.

Singh made the statement during his visit to Bishnupur district, where he met families affected by the disaster.

"I want to assure you that the government, through the Deputy Commissioners, will definitely make efforts to compensate the farmers for the loss caused by the recent hailstorm," he said.

He said, "I will soon inform the authorities so that they visit the place and discuss what assistance can be given."

Singh said that a new scheme for agriculture and horticulture will be launched to help the farmers.

Seeking assistance from local clubs in repairing damaged houses, he said, "Reconstruction material including tin sheets will arrive within four days."

Heavy hailstorm in the state damaged more than 15,000 houses and destroyed hectares of agricultural land.
