New Delhi Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday said the incident in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar of a man allegedly forced to "sell" his son to pay hospital fees was heartbreaking and questioned whether the Humans will now have to "buy and sell" others to stay alive in the country.

The man, Harish Patel, agreed to "sell" his three-year-old son under a fraudulent adoption document for a few thousand rupees on Friday to secure the "release" of his wife and newborn son from a private hospital after that he couldn't pay. his fees, the officials had said.

The incident sparked outrage and after police were informed, they arrested five people on Saturday, including a couple who took the child.

"The incident of a man selling his son due to poverty in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, is heartbreaking. Harish Patel admitted his pregnant wife Lakshmina to a hospital. She gave birth to a daughter. The hospital asked for Rs 4,000 for Harish did not have the money. The hospital refused to discharge the mother and child," he said.

The Congress leader claimed that Harish's family already has loans from many microfinance companies that they cannot repay and that many poor families like his have been trapped by these companies that charge 30 to 40 per cent interest.

"Where are the government's plans? Where is the health department? Who does the government work for? Will humans now have to buy and sell from others to stay alive in our country?" Priyanka Gandhi said.

Harish Patel, a resident of Barwa Patti, had sought medical attention at the hospital for his wife's delivery, police said. According to locals, he was the sixth son of Patel, who is a daily wager.

However, when he could not immediately pay the hospital fee, the hospital staff did not allow the mother and newborn to leave.

In his desperation, the father accepted the fraudulent adoption document, police said.

Upon learning about the incident, police launched an investigation and arrested five people involved in the crime, including alleged middleman Amresh Yadav, 'foster parents' Bhola Yadav and his wife Kalawati, a fake doctor Tara Kushwaha and an assistant at the hospital.
