Mumbai: Mumbai Police has arrested a man from Hyderabad for defrauding several women across several states of lakhs of rupees by promising to marry them, officials said on Wednesday.

He told that the accused used to contact women on matrimonial sites and cheat them of huge amount by promising marriage.

The man, identified as Imran Ali Faiz Ali Khan, was caught by personnel of Mumbai's Pydhonie police station on Tuesday, an official said.

The crime came to light when a 42-year-old woman from Pydhoni area lodged a police complaint against the accused for defrauding her of Rs 21.73 lakh after seeing his profile on a matrimony site, he said.

Khan came in contact with the woman through a matrimonial site in 2023 and promised to marry her, the officer said.

Between May and October 2023, he asked for money from the woman on various pretexts. He said the woman paid him Rs 21.73 lakh on different occasions through cash and online transactions.

When he reneged on the promise of marriage, the woman lodged a complaint and later a case was registered against the accused at Pydhonie police station under IP sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating).

While investigating the case, Mumbai Police traced Khan's location to Hyderabad with the help of technical analysis and nabbed him from the southern city, the officer said.

He told that after interrogation it was found that the accused had cheated many women in different states including Maharashtra in the same manner.

The official said Khan faces at least eight cases in Hyderabad and two in Parbhani district of central Maharashtra.
