Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday expressed grief over the death of several people after a huge billboard collapsed during a dust storm in Mumbai.

He expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident.

Banerjee said on Twitter, "It is sad to know that several people died and many were trapped and injured in a massive billboard accident in Mumbai this evening when a hoarding fell in a dust storm."

"My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and solidarity with the struggling survivors," he said.

The 100-foot tall billboard, which according to civic officials was illegal, uprooted and fell on a petrol pump at Cheddanagar Junction in Ghatkopar, killing eight people and injuring 70 others.

Low visibility due to unseasonal rain and dust storm led to suspension of flight operations at Mumbai airport for an hour in the evening, delaying local train services while traffic jams were witnessed in many areas.
