Since August 9, the day the body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal's young doctors have been on a stop-work protest, pressuring the government to meet their demands, which include the dismissal of senior officials of the state Health Department, including the Secretary of Health and the Director of Health Services. and Director of Medical Education, among others.

In a post on grieving families, the state government announces a symbolic financial relief of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person."

However, the protesting young doctors have repeatedly denied the state government's allegations that health services in the state have been disrupted due to their protest against the stoppage of work.

The West Bengal Young Doctors Forum (WBJDF), under whose banner the protests are being held, has said that if the absence of young doctors can lead to the collapse of the entire healthcare system in West Bengal, it shows how pathetic it is. the system. , with insufficiently trained doctors and a lack of associated medical personnel.

The WBJDF has also provided some statistics to back up its claims.

According to the medical body, of the 245 state hospitals in West Bengal, only 26 are medical colleges, adding that the total number of junior doctors in West Bengal is around 7,500, as against around 93,000 registered doctors.

After efforts to hold talks between the state administration and the protesting doctors failed again on Thursday due to the latter's demand to telecast the meeting live, the Chief Minister said: "I tried my best to sit with the "young doctors. I waited three days for them... As per the Supreme Court's instructions, they must join the service."

On Monday, the Supreme Court had said that young doctors protesting in West Bengal should resume their duties at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, failing which the state government will be authorized to initiate disciplinary action against them.

However, taken aback by the Supreme Court's ultimatum, the junior doctors vowed to continue their agitation and called for a march towards Swasthya Bhavan on Tuesday afternoon. The impasse between both parties has continued since then.
