Erode (Tamil Nadu): A 12-year-old male elephant died of "electric shock" in the Enthiyoor forest area of the district, forest officials said on Wednesday.
According to Enthiyur forest officials, villagers saw an elephant lying dead in the Karumparai forest area near Thooka Naikken Palayam on Tuesday evening.
A team of forest officials reached the spot and examined the elephant. They suspect that the animal may have been electrocuted.
Officials said farmers growing the crop have installed electric fences to prevent animals from entering their fields. He said that the elephant might have tried to enter the field in search of water and food and might have come in contact with the electric wire, due to which it died.
Officials said the exact cause of death would be known only after the autopsy on Wednesday.
