New Delhi: Maldivian Foreign Minister Musa Zameer will visit India on May 9, the first high-level visit from Male since pro-China President Mohammed Muizzu took office six months ago.

Announcing Zameer's visit, the External Affairs Ministry said it was expected to give further impetus to bilateral cooperation.

Relations between the two countries came under severe strain as Muiz insisted on the withdrawal of Indian military personnel deployed at three military platforms in the island nation.

India has already recalled most of its military personnel. President Muizzu has set a deadline of May 10 for the withdrawal of Indian military troops from his country.

"Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer will be in India on May 9 on an official visit," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.

It said Zameer would meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest.

"Maldives is India's key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean region and Foreign Minister Zameer's visit is expected to provide further impetus to bilateral cooperation between the two countries," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry said Zameer would hold talks with Jaishanka with a focus on "deepening and expanding the long-standing partnership" of the Maldives-India partnership.

"This is Foreign Minister Zameer's first official visit to India after assuming office," it said.
