Colombo: Maldives Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene and other senior leaders and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and people-to-people contacts, media reports said. Said on Thursday.

Zameer is the first Maldivian minister to visit Sri Lanka after the election of Mohammed Muizzu as President of the archipelagic nation in September last year.

Zameer, who is on a three-day visit to Colombo, met Wickremesinghe on Wednesday evening and Gunawardene on Thursday morning.

Earlier on Wednesday, Lankan Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Tharaka Balasuriya said in a statement, "The bilateral talks were successfully concluded with a shared resolve to cooperate for mutually beneficial purposes while reaffirming positive diplomatic relations."

Zameer also met Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri, who requested his Maldivian counterpart to lift the outbound remittance restrictions imposed on Lankan migrant workers in the Maldives, where a large number of Sri Lankans are employed.

Maldivian news portal Edition.mv reported on Thursday that the two ministers discussed mutual cooperation in monitoring each country's exclusive economic zone as both countries are heavily dependent on the fishing industry.
