Dibrugarh, Aam Aadmi Party strongly opposes the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and this is an important issue for it in the Lok Sabha elections in Assam. Senior party leader Atishi said here on Tuesday.

Talking to journalists he said that when the government is unable to provide jobs and houses to its own people then why should they create problems by bringing people from other countries?

"This will be a major issue that we are going to raise during our campaign for the two Lok Sabha seats in Assam," he said.

Atishi, who is Delhi's education minister, is in Assam on a three-day visit to campaign for the party's Dibrugarh candidate Monoj Dhanovar and Sonitpu candidate Rishiraj Kaundinya.

He said that another big issue for his party is the wages of tea garden workers in Assam which is very low compared to other states. He said, the minimum wage is highest in Delhi.

"The quality of schools and hospitals are other issues for you," he said.

Atishi claimed that around 8,000 government schools were closed in Assam in the last few years due to low enrolment.

He alleged that enrollment dropped because the condition of the schools was very poor.

He claimed that very few doctors and medicines were available in the hospitals of the state.

On the new schemes announced by the BJP-led government in the state, Atishi said people were aware that these were introduced keeping the elections in mind.He said, "It is not that he (CM Himanta Biswa Sarma) has come to power recently. If he really wanted to do something for women and the poor, he would have done it already."

On AAP, part of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, fielding candidates on two seats in Assam, Atishi said it was 'unfortunate'.

"When there is an alliance in the rest of the country, it should have happened here too," he said. Still, both the candidates are putting up a strong fight and AAP is confident of opening its account in Assam.,

Atishi said the people of Assam showed their trust in his party in the municipal elections and "we are sure they will do the same this time too."
