Doha [Qatar], Indian shooter Maheshwari Chauhan secured the 21st shooting quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics for India and finished fifth in the shotgun category after a solid performance in the women's skeet event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Olympic Shotgun Qualification Championships. Doha, Qatar Sunday's Doha event is the final qualifying event for Paris 2024 in shotgun. According to Olympics.com, two shooters from each event (maximum one per country) received quotas to compete. Maheshwari finished second behind Chile's Francisco Croveto Chadid in the women's skeet event. Both had scored 54-54 points but Chile won 4-3 in the shoot-off."I'm thrilled. It's taken a lot of hard work over the years to get here. I'm a little disappointed about the shoot-off, but overall, It has been very satisfying." Apart from him, the other shotgun shooters who have secured Olympic quota for India are Bhavneesh Mendiratta (men's trap), Rajeshwari Kumari (women's trap), Raiz Dhillon (women's skeet) and Anantjit Singh Naruka (men's skeet). Committees (NOCs) will decide who will represent the country in the multi-sport marquee event and those with quotas will not always get a chance to represent the tricolor at the highest level, which also means India will field two shooters. In the women's skeet event in Paris, Maheshwari shot a national record of 121 points in the qualifiers and made it to the six-person final, with Ganemat Sekhon finishing 24th with 115 and Areeba Khan 47th with 111.In the men's skeet event, none of the three Indian shooters advanced beyond the qualifiers. Tokyo Olympian Mairaj Ahmed was the best Indian in the qualifiers at 75th and former Asian champion Angadvi Singh Bajwa was at 77th while Sheeraz Shaikh finished 79th. The privilege of playing the final round was for the top six athletes. Indian trap shooters failed to raise their country's quota in Doha this week. Indian shooters have got 21 out of 24 possible quotas, including all possible eight quotas each in rifle and pistol events.This is India's best ever performance in shooting for any edition of the Olympics, surpassing Tokyo 2020's tally of 1.
