Inspired by the Centre's Nari Shakti Act passed last year, all the complex affairs of the 24-member-strong Kavita Residency Cooperative Housing Society here will now be handled by an all-women team, which will also include all the working and earning members of their households.

“At a recent meeting, the 11-woman executive committee was elected unopposed in this co-operative housing society, which comprised 24 flats constructed under the redevelopment project. All 24 members unanimously decided that the affairs of the society should be run by an all-women team,” said one of the members.

They are: Jyoti V. Bhavsar as the President, Archana A. Tatkar as Secretary and Poonam S. Rajwade has been named treasurer, incidentally all of them are commerce graduates and working women.

Other executive committee members include Deepti A. Ketkar (a banker), Kalpana Brahmankar (president of women SHG and treasurer of Gramsang comprising 26 SHGs).

Tejal M. Dhanawade is M.Com, while Shubhangi K. Dutonde is B.Com, Jyoti N. Dhamane and Trupti ji. Bain is representing nursing professionals Pratibha P. Jayde, 75, and Ganga Sharma. There are also people from North Indian community in the executive committee.

The proud husband of one of the top functionaries of the society claimed that this is probably the first women-run housing society in the Mumbai metropolitan area.

This has attracted a lot of attention and has already become a topic of hushed 'gossip' among men across the area, who feel a little insecure.

“Now, all (male) members are expected to rest in peace as women handle both their homes and society… Of course, we will always be ready to help them if they face any problem with the citizen. " body, or the Registrar of Societies or such other irate officials,” he assured.
