Apart from making Indian steel products more attractive to buyers, this initiative will also ensure standardized quality of goods.

The first-of-its-kind initiative was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and later conceptualized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and implemented by the Steel Ministry.

In November last year, the progress of the new initiative of the Ministry of Steel and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to introduce branding and labeling of 'Made-in-India' steel products globally was discussed in the Advisory Committee meeting of the Ministry of Steel . market.

The then Steel Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia (now Telecom Minister in the Modi 3.0 government) had said that "an Indian ministry, the labeling and branding initiative will ensure standardized quality of products made by all our Indian steel producers (ISPs)".Now, at least 80 per cent of ISPs have put the 'Made in India' label on their products, and the rest are likely to do so by the end of this month.

'Made in India' branding with QR codes helps in detailing domestic steel products.

The Ministry of Steel was the first ministry to initiate such a branding process, where a single brand identity for Indian-made steel would represent India's strong manufacturing capability.

'Made in India' branding introduced for select products of all major ISPs. ISP-QCI portal application programming interface (API) integration for label and QR code authentication was also completed.Scindia had stressed on efforts to make India as the "manufacturing hub" of the world, which requires a unified and distinctive identity for Indian steel that reflects its quality, innovation and sustainability practices.

Union Heavy Industries and Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had recently said that he would work under the guidance of PM Modi to realize his vision.

Kumaraswamy said his focus is to increase production and create employment across the country.
