This “brilliant initiative” is designed to provide relief to the policemen on duty under the scorching heat.

These helmets have AC vents to keep cool air flowing to the head, as well as hard plastic shields that act like goggles to protect the eyes from sun glare.

The helmet is connected to a large battery pack strapped to the person's waist, when the battery runs out, a red light on the top will alert the person to put the helmet on charging.

ADCP (Traffic) Ajay Kumar said, "The AC installed in the helmet will reduce the temperature by 10-15 degrees and this will provide relief to the policemen from the scorching heat."

After successful testing, around 500 such helmets will be purchased from the Hyderabad based company. The month-long trial will determine whether the product can be formally launched, the official said.

“The numbers will be decided by higher authorities. The weight of the helmet is half of a normal helmet and our policemen felt very comfortable,” the ADCP said.

DCP (traffic) Salmantaj Patil said, “This is the second such initiative in UP, a similar test was conducted by Kanpur police.”

Recently, similar tests were conducted in Bhubaneswar, Vadodara and other cities.

The helmets will be of two types – with two and eight hours of battery backup respectively. Reportedly, the first one will be provided to traffic personnel while the one with more backup will be provided to police personnel.

“Despite being comfortable for the user, the helmet will be checked for health risks as one part of the body is cold and the rest is exposed to heat. We will check if it has any negative impact,” the ADCP said.
