Students who want to pursue UG (four years with a research degree) but their respective universities do not offer research-level teaching will likely be transferred to LU or another university of equivalent reputation.

LU has more than 500 affiliated universities.

LU adopted the NEP in 2020, and the 2024-25 academic session will see the first batch of UG four-year students, who will receive UG honors with a research degree.

However, only those students who have obtained a cumulative score of 7.5 points or more up to the sixth semester will be able to pursue the UG for four years.

"Not all undergraduates will get the opportunity to pursue the four-year UG. Only meritorious ones, scoring above 7.5 CGPA (cumulative grade point average) will be able to take the four-year course. In the fourth year, the curriculum is completely research-centric, and a student will do a specialization in one subject just like in postgraduate studies," said academic dean Geetanjali Mishra.

He added that the university has already issued directives that only LU-affiliated colleges offering postgraduate (PG) degrees in a particular subject can admit students in their fourth year of UG in that subject.

Universities that do not offer PG in a particular subject will not be able to pursue four years of UG in that subject.

Students will be allowed to take the fourth year only in their major, also known as Major 1.

In cases where students from universities that do not offer PG but have scored 7.5 CGPA or above and want to pursue the fourth year of UG, they will probably be allowed to apply for admission in LU or another affiliated university offering the program.

"Lucknow University will become the first university to award the 'UG Honors with Research' degree in the country," said LU Vice-Chancellor Alok Kumar Rai.
