An alumnus of Mayo College, National Defense Academy (NDA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Ajmer, Lieutenant General Sharma is a recipient of the prestigious 'Sword of Honour'. He was also appointed to 'The Sindhi Horse' on 19 December 1987.

In his illustrious career spanning nearly four decades, the General has held important command appointments in various sensitive operational areas, counter-terrorism environments and high altitude terrains.

He has commanded 'The Sindhi Horse', an armored brigade as part of the Strike Corps, an infantry division and a corps on the Western Front. Before assuming charge as GO, ARTRAC, Lt Gen Sharma was also the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Western Command.

His staff experience includes challenging assignments in both operational and administrative areas.

Lieutenant General Sharma has been an instructor at the prestigious National Defense Academy, Indian Military Training Team, Staff Officer Operations in Bhutan and Chief Military Personnel Officer, United Nations Mission in Congo.

ARTRAC has been a strategic location of the Indian Army for almost 150 years, it was the headquarters of the Indian Army during the British rule from 1864 to 1939.

After independence, the headquarters of Western Command was located in Shimla during the India-Pakistan wars of 1948, 1965 and 1971 as well as the India-China war of 1962.

In 1985, the Western Command was shifted to Chandimandir.
