Noida: More than 300 programs were organized under SVEEP in Noida to increase the voting percentage during the Lok Sabha elections. Officials gave this information on Thursday.

He said the programs included cyclothon, marathon, rally of all women, transgenders, youth, especially persons with disabilities.

Officials said the campaign was also conducted in collaboration with resident welfare associations in sectors and apartment owners associations in housing societies to prevent "urban apathy".

Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) is the flagship program of the Election Commission of India for voter education, spreading voter awareness and promoting voter literacy.The Gautam Buddh Nagar constituency, which includes Noida and Great Noida cities, has seen low turnout in the Lok Sabha elections so far.

According to Election Commission data, the voter turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was 60.47 percent, compared to 60.38 percent in 2014 and a very low 48 percent in 2009.

The data shows that the constituency has consistently recorded voter turnout below the national average of 67.40 per cent in 2019, 66 per cent in 2014 and 58 per cent in 2009.

District Magistrate and District Election Officer Manish Kumar Verma said, “We have made all arrangements at the polling stations and are hopeful that voting will take place in large numbers. A massive awareness campaign has been conducted here.,

While announcing the imposition of the model code of conduct on March 16, Verme had mentioned "urban apathy" among some citizens in the constituency, which had resulted in low turnout here in the past.

District Social Welfare and Sweep Officer Shailendra Bahadur Singh has organized about 300 small and big voter awareness programs in the constituency since the implementation of MC.

"We have reached out to students in schools and colleges, conducted campaigns in markets, cinema halls, bus stands and auto stands to raise awareness," Singh said.

He said, “This is the first time that voting booths will be set up inside some of the big group housing societies in Noida and Greater Noida. We have reached out to residents in villages, across sectors and societies.,

The official said that as part of the awareness campaign, an all-women rally and marathon were organised, special rallies by transgenders, especially disabled youth were also organised.

"'Nukkad Natak' and 'Prabhat Pheri' were also organized at various places in the city to raise awareness and encourage voters to exercise their franchise," Singh said.

According to official data, voting is taking place in Gautam Buddh Nagar on Friday and there are 26.75 lakh registered voters, which include 14.50 lakh men, 12.24 lakh women and 119 third gender voters.
