North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], Basirhat, one of the 42 constituencies of West Bengal, is seeing a three-way fight between TMC, BJP and CPM in the Lok Sabha elections. The constituency consists of seven assembly seats, including Baduria, Haroa Minakhan, Sandeshkhali, Basirhat South, Basirhat North and Hingalganj, covering the entire North 24 Parganas district. The BJP has chosen Rekha Patra, who had led the protests against suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. Sandeshkhali, as the party's candidate. Sree is contesting against TMC's Haji Nurul Islam and CPIM's Nirapad Sardar.TMC has fielded Haji Nurul Islam in place of sitting MP and party leader Nusrat Jahan. Notably, Haji Nurul Islam won the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. Earlier this year, Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district was in the news when villagers, mainly women, protested against the ruling TMC and TM leader Shahjahan. They accused him and his associates of committing atrocities and usurping their land. Many women of Sandeshkhali have accused Shahjahan and his associates of forceful land grab and sexual harassment.Following this, TMC suspended Shahjahan, the main accused in Sandeshkhali, from the party for six years. He is currently in jail in the case of attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) team during the raid at his house related to the ration scam. TMC has been the dominant party in this seat, having won three consecutive Lok Sabha elections since 2009. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, TMC's Nusrat Jahan Ruhi won the seat by defeating BJP's Sayantan Basu. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, TMC's Idris Ali won the seat with 38.7 per cent vote share, while CPI candidate Nurul Huda got 30 per cent votes. Voting was held in Basirhat along with Barasat, Diamond Harbour, Dum Dum, Jaynagar Jadavpur.In the seventh and final phase of Lok Sabha elections, voting will be held in Kolkata South, Kolkata North and Mathurapur on June 1 and the counting of votes will take place on June 4.
