New Delhi: In the general elections, women candidates like Congress' Kumari Shailaja, BJP's Kangana Ranaut and Hema Malini, Samajwadi Party's Dimple Yadav and RJD's Misa Bharti won in their respective constituencies.

However, the defeated MPs also include Amethi MP Smriti Irani and Sultanpur MP Maneka Gandhi.

Shailaja won Haryana's Sirsa Lok Sabha seat by over 2.5 lakh votes, while Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, won the New Delhi seat by 78,370 votes.

This time a total of 797 women contested the Lok Sabha elections.

BJP candidate and first-time contender actor-politician Ranaut won against Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi by 74,755 votes. On the other hand, the veteran actor and sitting MP from Mathura retained the seat by securing 5.1 lakh votes.Dimple Yadav, wife of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and outgoing MP from Mainpuri, won easily over her nearest rival BJP's Jaiveer Singh by a margin of 2,21,639 votes.

RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav's daughter Misa Bharti won against Union Minister and sitting MP from Bihar's Patliputra Ram Kripal Yadav by a margin of 85,174 votes.

Trinamool Congress candidate Mahua Moitra won from Krishnanagar seat of West Bengal by 56,705 votes. DMK's Kanimozhi Karunanidhi retained her Thoothukudi seat by securing 5,40,729 votes.

Samajwadi Party's 25-year-old candidate Priya Saroj from Machhilishahr and 29-year-old Iqra Chaudhary from Kairana seat were among the youngest candidates to win.So far, more than 30 women candidates have won from their respective constituencies. This number is less than the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when 78 women candidates won.

After 12 hours of vote counting which started at 8 am, BJP emerged as the largest party by winning 240 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. However, this is a far cry from the 303 points achieved last time.
