Over 86.47 lakh voters, 70.77 per cent, exercised their franchise till 5 pm on Friday in five Lok Sabha seats in Guwahati, Assam. The election officer gave this information.

Voting percentage is expected to increase as people standing in queue till 5 pm will be allowed to cast their votes.

He said that Jorhat recorded the highest turnout of 76.20 percent, followed by Dibrugarh (70.65), Sonitpur (69.84), Kaziranga (68.90) and Lakhimpur (68.34).

Voting for the first phase of elections started at 7 am.

A total of 86,47,869 voters will decide the fate of 35 candidates on these five seats.

Prominent candidates include Union minister and BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal, who is contesting from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat against opposition candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and Congress's deputy leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, who is contesting against sitting BJP MP Topon Gogoi from Jorhat. Most of the candidates exercised their franchise within the first two hours of voting.

Kaziranga has the highest number of 11 candidates, followed by nine in Lakhimpur, eight in Sonitpur, four in Jorhat and three in Dibrugarh.
