A total of 60.70 per cent of over 86.47 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 3 pm on Friday in five Lok Sabha seats in Guwahati, Assam. The election officer gave this information.

He said that Jorhat recorded the highest turnout of 64.84 percent, followed by Sonitpu (60.29), Dibrugarh (60.83), Lakhimpur (59.53) and Kaziranga (58.33).

Voting for the first phase of the election began at 7 am and will continue till 12 noon.

A total of 86,47,869 voters will decide the fate of 35 candidates on these five seats.

Prominent candidates include Union minister and BJP candidate Sarbananda Sonowal, who is contesting from the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat against opposition candidate Lurinjyoti Gogoi, and Congress's deputy leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, who is contesting against sitting BJP MP Topon Gogoi from Jorhat. Some other important Lok Sabha candidates include BJP's Lakhimpur incumbent M Pradan Baruah, Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and MLA Ranjit Dutta.

Most of the candidates exercised their franchise within the first two hours of voting.

Kaziranga has the highest number of 11 candidates, followed by Lakhimpur with nine, Sonitpur with eight, Jorhat with four and Dibrugarh with three.
