Puducherry, District Election Officer A Kulothunga said here on Tuesday that all necessary arrangements have been made for the Lok Sabha elections to be held on April 19 in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

He said that special arrangements have been made for senior citizens, pregnant women and physically challenged voters at polling stations to ensure that they do not face any difficulty in exercising their franchise.

Addressing media persons, Kulothungan appealed to voters to exercise their franchise to ensure 100 per cent voting in the Union Territory.

The DEO said that the campaigning of political parties and candidates should end at 6 pm on Wednesday. To ensure that there is no violation of the Model Code of Conduct, the number of flying squads has been increased from 2 to 72.

He said at least 4,468 government employees have been deployed for election duty and 21 micro-observers who are being trained will also take charge.Kulothungan said 23 polling stations in Puducherry would be manned by women staff. Apart from this, 31 polling centers in Mahe, five centers in Karaikal and one in Yanam will be polled by them. Eight polling stations will be manned by youth, while one booth each in Mahe, Karaikal and Yanam will be manned by youth.

The DEO said 1,529 persons (85 years and above) exercised their franchise under the special arrangement to vote from home and 1,294 persons with disabilities also used the facility.

He said that people above 85 years of age will be provided special transport facilities to reach their respective polling stations and they will be dropped back at their residence on April 19.“All voters should bring their voter photo identity cards and if the cards are lost they can show any of the 10 alternative documents approved by the Election Commission like PAN card, bank pass book or driving license,” the DEO said.

Voting will begin at 7 am on April 19 and end at 6 pm. He said voters who reach polling stations before 6 pm will be issued tokens to enable them to vote.

The total number of voters in Puducherry is 10,23,699 and out of them, 4,80,569 are male, 5,42,979 are female and 151 voters fall under the third gender. 28.92 are first time voters.Twenty-six candidates are in the fray for the Union Territory's lone Lok Sabha seat.
