Srinagar: To create a "festival-like atmosphere" on polling day, police officials in Srinagar district have prepared 32 theme-based polling stations which are colour-coordinated as per its message.

Polling stations have been prepared according to their theme in pink, red, blue colours. Women voters, disabled voters and young voters. Eight polling stations have also been set up with the theme of environmental sustainability.

Voting will be held in Srinagar on May 13 in the fourth phase to elect its Lok Sabha MP.Bilal Mohi-ud-din Bhat, District Electoral Officer (DEO), Srinagar, said there will be vibrant and colorful message boards at 32 polling stations so that voters can experience a festival-like atmosphere besides promoting participatory and inclusive voting in Srinagar. .

He said, "...District Election Office, Srinagar has made the polling stations colorful and vibrant with special messages about women, persons with disabilities (PWD) and youth, besides making the polling stations environmentally friendly. Made viable and sustainable."

Bhatt, who is also the returning officer of Srinagar parliamentary constituency, said eight pink polling stations have been set up for women in different areas of Srinagar - from Hazratbal, Anchor to Central Shalteng.

He said that these polling stations will be managed entirely by women staff which will include booth level officials, presiding and polling officers, police and security forces.

Bhatt said the theme of the polling booths is women-centric, which shows that women are capable of discharging duties in any walk of life.Bhatt said that eight red polling stations have been set up for persons with disabilities, which will be staffed by persons with disabilities.

“These polling stations have been equipped with wheelchairs, ramps, Braille script and other facilities to instill confidence in the differently-abled so that the voting process becomes a smooth activity for them.

The DEO said, "...the objective is to create confidence among the class and encourage them to vote wherever they can, besides increasing their sensitivity about their issues."

Moreover, he said, more than 40 per cent of the disabled have already been given the opportunity to cast their vote under the ECI initiative 'Vote from Home'.

The three-day campaign for home voting which was flagged off by the DE on May 7 ended on Thursday.Eight polling stations in Srinagar district have been painted blue for the youth.

"To promote environmental sustainability, eight polling stations have been painted green while tree planting activity will be carried out by the first voter on the polling day," he said, adding that the polling stations will be plastic free.

Around 17.50 lakh people will decide the fate of 24 candidates contesting for the Lok Sabha elections in Srinagar on May 13.

Of these, more than two lakh are first-time voters, aged between 18-20 years.
