Imphal (Manipur) [India], 857 polling stations, 87 companies of paramilitary forces and over 4000 state police have been deployed in Outer Manipur ahead of the second phase of elections to be held on April 26. Chief Electoral Officer Pradeep Kumar Jha said that there are a total of 857 polling stations including special polling stations in the second phase of elections. 87 companies of central paramilitary forces and over 4000 state police forces have also been deployed to ensure free and fair elections. He further said that 191 polling stations will be managed exclusively by women polling personnel following incidents of violence during voting in the initial phase. Lok Sabha elections on April 19, evoking grim memories of caste conflicts that claimed lives and displaced scores of people, Manipur will again try for democracy on April 26, while the Interior Manipur constituency, which is majority Parts of Outer Manipur, home to the Meitei people, also went to polls to elect their Lok Sabha representative in the first phase on April 19. The remaining parts of Outer Manipur will go to polls in the second phase on April 26.Although there is no official word on the rationale behind holding elections in both phases in Outer Manipur, it is believed that the decision was taken after assessing security concerns over the violence. Earlier, re-polling was held at 11 polling stations in Inner Manipur constituency on April 22 after several incidents of violence were reported during the first phase of polling on April 19. Unidentified miscreants opened fire and even destroyed EVMs. According to sources, re-polling was conducted amid tight security to avoid any mishap at the affected polling stations; Two were from Khurai assembly constituency, four in Chhetrigao, one in Thongju, three in Uripok, and one in Konthouja constituency. The constituency of Outer Manipur is currently held by Lorho Foze of Nag People Front, however, this time NPF is going into the fray.Election as a partner in the BJP-led NDA. Earlier, the BJP had announced support to NPF candidate Katchui Timothy Zimik for Out Manipur. Zimik is pitted against Congress MLA Alfred K Arthur, who is the joint opposition candidate of the India Bloc. Manipur witnessed more than 69 percent voting in April. Voting for the remaining 13 blocks of 19 Outer Manipur will be held in the second phase on April 26. Counting of votes will take place on June 4.
