Kolkata: Veteran Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's defeat to political newbie Yusuf Pathan in his stronghold Baharampur in this Lok Sabha election came as a surprise to many, like the defeat of BJP's Dilip Ghosh and CPI(M)'s Mohammed Saleem.

The defeat of BJP's Nisith Pramanik and Locket Chatterjee at the hands of Trinamool Congress candidates also raised many eyebrows.

Chaudhary's bid to win from Baharampur constituency for the sixth consecutive time failed at the hands of cricketer-turned-politician Pathan, who was called by the TMC to contest from the seat in his first foray into politics from Baroda in Gujarat. ,

According to Election Commission (EC) data, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president lost by 85,022 votes.

Former BJP West Bengal state president Dilip Ghosh was defeated by another cricketer-turned-politician, TMC's Kirti Azad, by 1,37,981 votes in the Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency.Under Ghosh's leadership in the state, the BJP grew from two seats in 2014 to 18 out of 42 constituencies in West Bengal in 2019, establishing the saffron party as TMC's main rival in the state.

However, Ghosh's shift from Medinipur constituency to Bardhaman-Durgapur, where BJP's SS Ahluwalia had won by nearly 3,000 votes in 2019, proved costly for him.

CPI(M)'s West Bengal secretary Mohammed Saleem failed to turn around the party's fortunes in the state, losing to TMC's Abu Tahir Khan by 1,64,215 votes.

After scoring zero in the 2019 general elections and 2021 assembly elections, the CPI(M)-led Left Front failed to open its account in the Lok Sabha elections in Bengal this time too.

CPI(M) loyalists were hopeful that Salim, a party politburo member, would be able to win the seat, but the Mamata Banerjee-led party dashed their hopes.Nisith Pramanik, Union minister of state in the previous BJP-led NDA government, suffered a surprise defeat by 39,250 votes at the hands of TMC candidate Jagdish Chandra Barma Basunia in Cooch Behar.

He is the only BJP candidate to lose in North Bengal, with the saffron party winning all six seats in the region except Maldaha North constituency.

BJP's Locket Chatterjee's hopes of a second consecutive victory from Hooghly were dashed by former actor and television reality show host Rachana Banerjee, another newbie candidate fielded by TMC, who emerged victorious.

Chatterjee was defeated by a margin of 76,853 votes by Banerjee, whose reality show "Didi No. 1" had invited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, before her name was announced as the TMC candidate from Hooghly.
