Guwahati, Assam Police on Wednesday said contractor and local BJP leader Sunil Gogoi, who was earlier believed to be decapitated, has been declared an absconding accused for the murder of his family's mason, whose headless body has been identified. He was mistakenly identified as Gogoi and was cremated.

On June 1, a headless and half-burnt body was found in an open field near Gogoi's residence, prompting further investigation. Gogoi's wife and other family members were questioned at the Dhakuakhana police station on Wednesday, an official said.

On Tuesday, Lakhimpur SP Aparna N said that Gogoi had recently purchased an insurance policy worth Rs 41 lakh.

Gogoi, vice-president of BJP Kisan Morcha Dhakuakhana district committee and a contractor associated with Jal Jeevan Mission, had alleged corruption in Lakhimpur's public health engineering department, leading to the arrest of an executive engineer by the Chief Minister's Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department.(V&AC) Wing.

Earlier this week, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated that the body may not be that of Gogoi and that the forensic investigation would reveal the truth. During investigation it was revealed that Hossain was missing since May 30.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed and forensic experts were called in to investigate the murder. Additionally, an IGP level officer from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police supervised the entire investigation.
