New Delhi: More than 50 people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at a religious congregation in a village in Hathras district on Tuesday.

This is not the first time that large numbers of people have been killed in stampedes at temples and other religious gatherings in India over the years.

Some of the biggest casualties caused by stampedes at religious gatherings include the death of more than 340 devotees at the Mandhardevi temple in Maharashtra in 2005 and at least 250 were killed at the Chamunda Devi temple in Rajasthan in 2008.

A stampede at a religious gathering at the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh led to the deaths of 162 people in 2008.

Below is a list of some of the major tragedies that have taken place in the country in recent years:

*March 31, 2023: At least 36 people were killed when the slab built over an ancient 'bawdi' or well collapsed during a 'havan' program held on the occasion of Ram Navami at a temple in the city of Indore.

* January 1, 2022: At least 12 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir triggered by a huge rush of devotees.

* July 14, 2015: Twenty-seven pilgrims were killed and 20 others injured in a stampede at a major bathing spot on the banks of the Godavari river, where a large crowd of devotees had gathered on the opening day of the 'Pushkaram' festival in Rajahmundry. in Andhra Pradesh.

* October 3, 2014: Thirty-two people were killed and 26 others injured in a stampede at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, soon after Dussehra celebrations ended.

* October 13, 2013: 115 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a stampede during Navratri festivities near Ratangarh temple in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh. The stampede was sparked by rumors that a bridge over the river that devotees were crossing was about to collapse.

* November 19, 2012: Around 20 people were killed and many others injured when a makeshift bridge collapsed, triggering a stampede during Chhath Puja at Adalat Ghat on the bank of the Ganges river in Patna.

* November 8, 2011: At least 20 people died in a stampede in Haridwar, at the Har-ki-Pauri ghat, on the banks of the Ganges river.

* January 14, 2011: At least 104 Sabarimala devotees were killed and more than 40 injured in a stampede when a jeep crashed into homebound pilgrims at Pulmedu in Idukki district of Kerala.

* March 4, 2010: Around 63 people were killed in a stampede at Kripalu Maharaj's Ram Janki temple in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district as people gathered to collect free clothes and food from the self-proclaimed god.

* September 30, 2008: Nearly 250 devotees were killed and more than 60 injured in a stampede sparked by rumors of a bomb blast at the Chamunda Devi temple in the city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

* August 3, 2008: 162 dead and 47 injured in a stampede sparked by rumors of rockfalls at the Naina Devi temple in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh.

* January 25, 2005: More than 340 devotees were trampled to death and hundreds injured during an annual pilgrimage to the Mandhardevi temple in Satara district of Maharashtra. The accident occurred when some people fell on the steps that the devotees had made slippery while breaking coconuts.

* August 27, 2003: 39 people were killed and around 140 injured in a stampede during holy bathing at Kumbh Mela in Nashik district of Maharashtra.
