Puducherry, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) on Thursday said it is providing the best possible care to patients brought from Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu who fell ill after consuming illicit liquor.

JIPMER director, Dr Rakesh Aggarwal, said in a release that 19 patients "with alleged history of illicit liquor consumption" arrived at the hospital on Wednesday.

Of the nineteen patients, three were brought dead and the remaining 16 were seriously ill. Ten of them required immediate ventilatory support and have been admitted to hospital intensive care units and remain critically ill.

The release also said, "All patients are being provided the best possible care by inter-disciplinary teams of doctors at the hospital as per the needs of the patients and are also being closely monitored."
