Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) will march to the Kerala Assembly here on June 12 demanding a judicial inquiry into the Left government's alleged move to amend the state's liquor policy.

UDF convenor MM Hasan said the opposition front also wants the excise and tourism ministers facing charges in the alleged scam to resign.

"The UDF will intensify its agitation inside and outside the Assembly. If the government is not ready for a judicial inquiry, the opposition will take the protest to the grassroots level," he told reporters here.

The UDF announced the assembly march at a time when the government is facing intense criticism from various quarters over its alleged move to amend the liquor policy to do away with the 'dry day' norm.

The criticism comes after reports that the state government is considering scrapping the 'dry day' norm (which bans the sale of liquor in the state on the first day of every calendar month) led to a political storm in the state. .

While the Congress-led UDF has accused the LDF government of taking bribes to give 'favours' to bar owners, the Left claimed that it has not yet held any consultation on its liquor policy.

Hassan alleged that the bar owners had collected the money to pay bribes with the knowledge of the excise and tourism ministers.

"How many crores were collected? How many did the CPI(M) get? This should be investigated," he said.

The UDF convenor also alleged that the government was planning to avoid 'dry days' not only to increase the state's income but also to increase the assets of the Marxist party.

He said the real facts regarding the alleged scam would not be revealed by the ongoing investigation by the Crime Branch and he wanted the government to order a judicial inquiry.
