Thiruvananthapuram: After a brief lull, several parts of Kerala received continuous rain coupled with strong winds on Tuesday, throwing normal life out of gear.

Due to continuous rain since morning, many narrow lanes and busy roads in Kochi and surrounding areas were submerged.

In many areas of the port city, people could not come out of their homes and the roads were flooded. After the rain, vehicles were seen moving slowly on the highway.

Normal life was affected due to waterlogging in Kakkanad-Infopark and Aluva-Edapalli areas.The city and rural areas of the capital Thiruvananthapuram have been receiving heavy rain since Monday night.

Trees were uprooted and rivers overflowed in villages in Thiruvananthapuram district.

In nearby Neyyattinkara, a house was seriously damaged after a tree uprooted it and fell on it during heavy rain accompanied by strong winds.

Nedumangadu, Neyyattinkara, Kattakkada and Amburi areas located in the high ranges of the district received widespread rainfall.

According to locals, a part of a hill behind the famous Bali Mandapam Papanasam near Varkala collapsed due to heavy rains.The eco-tourism center at hill station Ponmudi was closed following bad weather.

District officials said heavy rains continued to lash rural areas of Thiruvananthapuram, where shutters of the Aruvikkara dam were raised by 90 cm.

He said that since the shutters will be raised up to 150 cm in view of heavy rains, people living nearby are advised to remain alert.

High tides and rough seas have been reported in coastal areas, posing a threat to fishing vessels in these areas of the state.

Two incidents of boat capsizing were also reported off the coast of Muthalapozhi fishing colony, located about 30 km from here.In one incident, a fisherman died after his boat capsized due to strong tidal waves this morning.

Three other people, who also fell into the sea, were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, police said.

According to the latest update from the Indian Meteorological Department, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds up to 40 kmph are likely at one or two places in Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts on Tuesday.

It said moderate rain is expected at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur and Malappura districts, while isolated light rain is predicted in Palakkad and Kannu districts.
