New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Wednesday directed the city police chief to ensure strict vigil on the Munak Canal to prevent theft of water, as the national capital grapples with water crisis.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Water Minister Atishi requested the LG to depute an Assistant Police Commissioner level officer to monitor the Munak Canal in Delhi to ensure that there is no illegal water-logging activity. .

"It has been widely reported in the media and also mentioned in the related case pending in the Hon'ble Supreme Court that tanker mafia has become active amid the water crisis in Delhi. It has also come to light that these tankers are being operated illegally. Theft of water from the Munak Canal, which carries water from the state of Haryana to Delhi, is being made formally, a communication from the LG Secretariat said.

The apex court also said that if the government cannot deal with the tanker mafia then it will ask the city police to take action against the tanker mafia.

The court said that if the same water can be supplied through tankers then why cannot it be supplied through pipelines.

"Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor has desired that strict monitoring/surveillance should be ensured along this canal to prevent any kind of theft of water by the tanker mafia and also arrest such persons who have been involved in such illegal theft in the past. activities and take necessary legal action against such mafia elements,” the LG Secretariat communication said.

It added, “A compliance report in this regard may be submitted to this Secretariat within a week for the perusal of the Honorable Lieutenant Governor."
