Addressing the media after the GST Council meeting, the minister said that as of December 31, 2023, only 1.96 per cent of all active tax assesses have been sent notices from the Central GST (CGST). Out of total 58.62 lakh taxpayers, notices have been sent by CGST to about 1.14 lakh taxpayers.

The council in its 53rd meeting on Saturday took several taxpayer-friendly steps, including waiving interest and penalty on demand notices for financial years 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20 if the full tax demand is paid by March 31. Is done till. 2025.

The GST Council, headed by Sitharaman and comprising her state counterparts, has also recommended reduction in the amount of pre-deposit to be paid for filing appeals under GST.

In order to reduce the interest burden of taxpayers, the GST Council has recommended not to charge interest on the amount available in the Electronic Cash Ledger (ECL) on the due date of filing of the said return, in case of delay in filing the return.

The Council has also recommended exemption from compensation cess on imports into the SEZ by the SEZ unit/developer for authorized operations from July 1, 2017.
