The new criminal laws, the Indian Civil Code (BNS), the Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS), and the Indian Evidence Act (BSA), will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act. Act, respectively, from 1st July.

Haribal Debnath, secretary of AILU's Tripura unit, said Saturday's protest was part of a nationwide movement against the new laws.

Debnath said three new criminal laws were passed in Parliament in December last year after the House suspended a large number of MPs who wanted to discuss the new laws and register their protest.

Debnath termed these as 'draconian laws' and said, "The three new laws are undemocratic and anti-people." They will change the basic structure of the legal system in the country, which says that a person is innocent until proven guilty. AILU was fighting against the laws even before they were passed in Parliament. We want the three new criminal laws to be abolished.”

Meanwhile, Tripura Home Secretary Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty on Saturday said the new laws will speed up the judicial process and ensure speedy justice for the victims.

“More than 3,000 officials from various departments have been trained on the applicability of the new laws in the state,” Chakraborty told the media.
